DENISON COUNTY, IOWA
Dan Mundt wrote a story for Lyle Stepanek's "hometown" newspaper in Dow City, Iowa about his World War II service: on Baker Island in 1943, and on the USS Leopold, which was sunk with Lyle on board on March 9, 1944.
In addition to his place in the Baker Island book, another book, Never to Return, was recently published about the sinking of the Leopold; so after 74 years, Lyle is having a publicity blitz!
His sister, Nancy Stepanek Rosburg, generously shared his letters and photographs from Islesford and Baker Island; so while neither of us knew him, or each other, it became rather an emotional journey.
